Jurong Regional Library to be relocated as URA further develops Jurong Lake District
Jurong Regional Library to be relocated as URA further develops Jurong Lake District. The Jurong Regional Library will be relocated as part of the next phase of development for the Jurong Lake District, which will focus on the area south of the Jurong East MRT station.
According to a proposed change to the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s (URA) master plan released on October 14, the library would be replaced by a residential development with shops on the ground floor. According to a URA spokesman, the proposed improvements, which also include new construction plots south of Jurong Town Hall Road and a new road network in the Science Centre region, will have an impact on three other developments.
The old French-Singapore Institute (12 Science Centre Road) and German-Singapore Institute (10 Science Centre Road) will be renovated, while the proposed amendment will affect The Annexe and surface parking at Science Centre Singapore. In a statement, the National Library Board (NLB) stated that it is aware of the URA’s plans to rebuild the area where the library is located and that it is currently “working up ideas for the new library.” According to NLB, who did not specify when the library would relocate, more information will be released as soon as it is available.
In August 1988, the regional library opened as Jurong East Community Library, becoming the National Library’s eighth full-time branch. After Tampines Regional Library (1994) and Woodlands Regional Library (1994), it was renovated and reopened in June 2004 as Singapore’s third regional library. With a floor area of 12,020 square meters spread across four storeys and a basement, it was the largest regional library at the time. According to a URA official, the agency’s development efforts will be concentrated south of the MRT station and on the former Jurong Country Club property over the next 15 to 20 years.
